Diversity

Diversity is paramount to Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization’s mission. It is a crucial business practice that allows us to reach and affect more people, strengthen the quality of our services and enhance the capabilities of our national and affiliate workforce and volunteers. Diversity, then, increases our competitive edge. It is also essential to our stated value to recognize, value and incorporate the characteristics that make each person and community unique.

Reaching More People
Breast cancer does not discriminate. It touches everyone regardless of gender, race, age, geography, religion, sexual orientation or any other characteristic. Offering truly diverse peer support to those in need helps us fulfill Y-ME’s mission to ensure that no one faces breast cancer alone. A diverse work team, attuned to the traditions, perspectives and cultures of distinct groups, can develop approaches and practices that impact increasing numbers of individuals and families both nationally and internationally.

Enhancing the Quality of Services
Different viewpoints spark creative ideas that expand the way Y-ME thinks about our constituents and the services that support them. Our willingness to employ new solutions in response to varied needs increases the impact of our services to an evolving and diverse world.

Improving the Quality of National and Affiliate Workforce and Volunteers
Embracing diversity helps Y-ME recruit and retain the highest quality staff possible. As we seek to reflect the communities we serve, top job candidates are attracted to employers who show they are committed to sustaining a diverse workforce, and factor this in when deciding whether to accept or reject an employment offer. Our future depends on the quality of our employees and volunteers today.

Opening the Door for More Funding
Our commitment to diversity generates new individual and corporate donors that support our mission. Funders now ask organizations for details about their diversity initiatives. Individuals, corporations, vendors, foundations and other sources will initially donate and then donate more often to an organization committed to diversity.

Strengthening Our Future
A diverse workplace is a training ground that offers the opportunity for employees and volunteers to learn to adapt, handle change and learn from others. Dealing with the constant change will ensure our organization’s future.
