STOCKHOLM -- A novel monoclonal antibody-guided therapy for HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer extended disease-free survival compared with standard treatment, researchers said here.
In a phase II trial, patients on the investigational treatment called trastuzumab emtansine, or T-DM1, achieved roughly a 40% reduction in risk of disease progression compared with those on a standard combination of trastuzumab (Herceptin) plus docetaxel (Taxotere) (P=0.035), according to Sara Hurvitz, MD, director of breast oncology at the University of California Los Angeles.
Hurvitz reported the findings during a press briefing here at the European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress, formerly known as the joint congress of the European Cancer Organization and European Society for Medical Oncology (ECCO-ESMO).
