Triple Negative Breast Cancer

Printer-friendly versionSend to friend

Triple negative breast cancers are usually invasive ductal carcinomas.  They are sometimes described as a separate type of breast cancer because they lack both estrogen receptors (ER-) and progesterone receptors (PR-), and do not over-express the HER2 gene (HER2-, another tumor protein receptor) – thus, they are triple negative.  Triple negative breast cancers occur more frequently in younger women and African-American women.  They may grow more quickly than other types of breast cancer, and are not responsive to hormonal therapies, though they are typically more sensitive to certain chemotherapy treatments.
